Jazz on the Lake 2006 : The local jazz festival here in Port Huron called Jazz on the Lake was originally started by piano player Bob Gibbs as a birthday party for his wife Maggie 24 years ago. He asked all of his musician friends to bring their instruments and set up in his back yard for the afternoon. Soon the popularity of the event grew that they had to move the venue over to the Edison Inn which sits right on the St. Clair river.

Sadly, Bob passed away just a couple months ago. This year, we dedicated the festival to his memory. We hope it continues on as it's a great way for folks to get together, play some music, and enjoy the summer.

CanAm Jazz Festival 2006 : Held on July 23rd, the CanAm Jazz Festival was hosted by the Holiday Inn in Sarnia, ON, Canada. Musicians from the Blue Water area and beyond gathered to kick off "All That Jazz" - weekly live jazz performances in the lounge of the hotel.

I had the good fortune to be invited to play as well with Quint Essence, a quintet lead by my good friend Charlie Stephens. I met Charlie originally as a bass player. I come to find out later that he started out on trombone. A few months ago he bought a new horn and started arranging for a valve trombone/tenor sax combo and asked me to dust off the horn.

I'm glad he did.

Sorry, but no pictures of me. Maybe next time...

International Symphony Orchestra - Caroline in Concert : Our concert on the 24th and 25th of February featured 13 year old violinist Caroline Goulding. She's actually "home grown" here in the Blue Water Area. She recently relocated to the Cleveland area to study at the Cleveland Institute of Music.

This young lady is fantastic. Such maturity. And better yet, she's still a kid. She will be one to look out for in the coming years.

The piece she played with the orchestra was the Concerto fo Violin in D Major by Paganini. It's a bear and she nailed it. In fact, I caught myself just listening instead of capturing the moments with my camera.

Oh yeah, and the orchestra played a couple numbers. Their big piece with Tchicovsky's Symphony No. 6, The Pathetique. Another tough piece and they played it very wel.

International Symphony Orchestra - A Valentine's Vignette : Last Sunday, members of the ISO put together a chamber concert, featuring many of the principal wind players and a few others. The goal was to raise funds for the organization and all we asked for was donations at the door. We did pretty well - brought in over $600!

There was a mixture of traditional chamber music, 20th Century compositions, and even a little jazz. It was a nice little show and we hope to put it on every year.

International Symphony Orchestra - Songs of Erin : For the annual Celtic Concert, the ISO put on a program titled "Songs of Erin". Several guests appeared with the ensemble that evening.

First, our guest conductor was Jeff Christmas who is also quite a composer in his own right. In fact, several of the pieces performed were arranged by him.

Also performing were Paul Stevens on trumpet, Aaron MacDonald on various traditional wind instruments, and Dean Harrions on piano and accordian.

The duo Sirens (Donna Creighton & Jo-Ann Lawton) performed several traditional melodies and even sang in Gaelic.

We also had Nora Corrigan stepdancing at the front of the stage for a few numbers. Nora previously performed with Riverdance as the lead dancer.

And of course, we can't forget the pipes and drums...

It was a great show. I enjoyed the music as much as I enjoyed capturing the photos.

Semi 7 Live on Stage : There's a new band on the scene in the Blue Water Area - Semi 7.

Two of the guys are former members of Liquor Box, which is how I got hooked up with them. Scott, now the bassist for Semi 7 called me and asked me to come out and snap off a few at their gig on December 4th. Of course I was happy to do so - photographing musicians is one of my favorite things. And adding good music to the mix, how could I refuse.

I really like these guys. Their set list is a great mix of music from all decades of Rock & Roll. They've got a lot of energy and have a good time on stage. Hope you enjoy the shots as much as I had taking them.

For any fans out there, the photos are for sale and can be purchased by just adding one or more to your shopping cart. 4x6 prints are $1.50, 5x7s are $3.00 and 8x10s are $6.00. Photo gifts, such as t-shirts, buttons, postcards, and other neat things are also available.

Please contact me at amunsie@comcast.net for any questions.

International Symphony Orchestra - Celestial Sounds of the Season : What's become an annual tradition, the International Symphony Orchestra teamed up with their partner organization, the International Symphony Singers for the performance of Handel's "Messiah".

Also on the program were two short anthems for chorus and orchestra, an arrangement of "Angels from the Realms of Glory" by our own Charlie Stephens and the "Oratorio de Noel" by Saint-Saens. If you aren't familiar with this last piece, I highly recommend finding a recording. It is simply gorgeous.

International Symphony Orchestra - Heavenly Variations : For the second concert of the season, the ISO presented a program they coined "Heavenly Variations". Guest artist Ronald Turini performed the Chopin Piano Concerto No. 1 flawlessly. The orchestra also performed the overture from Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro and Elgar's Variations on an Original Theme (Enigma).

Porcupine Tree : This is a band that is at the top of my listening list. A relatively new discovery for me, these guys are fantastic.

When a buddy and I decided to head down to their show at the Majestic Theater in Detroit on October 8th, I decided to take a chance and email their manager to see if I could get permission to bring the old shooting iron along.

Obviously, I received the go ahead. And boy, it was well worth it. Probably the best show I've been to in a long time.

Please check out their web site. There's an interesting story behind the band and they have some samples of the new album. It's a fantastic listen.

International Symphony Orchestra - An Unlikely Affair : The first concert of the 48th season of the International Symphony Orchestra was a show put on by violinists Frank Leahy and Robin Braun called "An Unlikely Afair".

The premise is that Robin is a strict classical performer and Frank is a down-home country fiddler. The audience then becomes the witnesses of the conflict between the two of them.

Robin and Frank are not only excellent musicians, but pretty darn good actors as well. The music was excellent and the banter between the two of them was hilarious.
